Escape hatches: stay with Gemini, or go?

Three realistic paths after the Assistant shutdown: accept Gemini and make it work, move your smart home to Home Assistant, or switch ecosystems to Alexa. None is free of trade-offs. Here they are, without cheerleading.

The fact that makes leaving possible

Matter-certified devices work on Google, Alexa, Apple Home, and Home Assistant simultaneously. Your Matter bulbs, plugs, and switches don’t need replacing — only re-linking. Pre-Matter Wi-Fi gear usually connects to Alexa via vendor skills and to Home Assistant via integrations, but check each device before committing.

Option 1: Stay with Gemini

Choose this if your usage is mainstream — timers, music, lights, questions — and your devices are recent. The free tier covers core smart-home control, media, alarms/timers, calendar, notes and lists, and broadcasts, and reliability has been improving with monthly updates (the 5 August update specifically targeted timers, alarms, notes, and reminders).

Eyes open about:

Option 2: Home Assistant — own your smart home

Choose this if the migration taught you a lesson about renting your smart home, or your automations outgrew Google’s editor years ago. Home Assistant is open source, runs on hardware in your house, executes device commands locally (fast, and it works when the internet is down), and can never be force-migrated by anyone.

What it takes:

What you gain over Google: automations with any trigger and any logic (including things Google never had — sensor thresholds, sun elevation, your phone’s next alarm as a wake-routine trigger), a dashboard for everything, and local speed. What you lose: the polish of a big-tech assistant for open-ended questions, unless you wire one in yourself.

Option 3: Alexa — the easy lateral move

Choose this if you want working voice control this weekend with minimal thought. Echo hardware is cheap (Dot ~$50, Pop ~$40, Show 8 ~$150), the device catalog is the industry’s biggest at roughly 140,000 products, and routines cover the mainstream cases including announcements — a serviceable Family Bell substitute.

A word on Apple Home / Siri

If your household is already deep in iPhones, a HomePod mini plus Matter devices is a workable, private-ish ecosystem — but Siri remains the weakest voice assistant of the four for general use, and non-Matter Google-era gear mostly won’t come along. We don’t recommend it as a primary escape from this migration unless you were heading into Apple anyway.

How to switch without a dead week

  1. Run the new system alongside Google for at least a week — Matter devices answer to both at once.
  2. Move automations one at a time, starting with the ones the Gemini migration already broke (you’ve lost nothing if they misfire twice).
  3. Only factory-reset and box up the Google speakers when the replacement has survived a full week of household use, including whoever is least patient with technology.
